worship as communal exchangeLiturgy image

called to come in

God comes near and calls his people out of the world, and takes hold of us and brings us into the community of Himself.

Song: 10,000 Reasons (Bless the Lord)

Bless the Lord, O my soul
O my soul
Worship His holy name

Sing like never before, O my soul
I’ll worship Your holy name

The sun comes up
it’s a new day dawning
It’s time to sing Your song again

Whatever may pass
and whatever lies before me
Let me be singing
when the evening comes

You’re rich in love
and You’re slow to anger
Your name is great
and Your heart is kind

For all Your goodness
I will keep on singing
Ten thousand reasons
for my heart to find

And on that day
when my strength is failing
The end draws near
and my time has come

Still my soul will sing
Your praise unending
Ten thousand years
and then forevermore

I’ll worship Your holy name
Yes, I’ll worship Your holy name

we hear | Isaiah 61:10-11

Rejoice greatly in the Lord; exult in your God!  For he has clothed us with righteousness!

For as the earth brings forth its sprouts, and as a garden causes what is sown to sprout up, so the Lord will cause righteousness and praise to sprout up before all nations!

we respond : SONG: Praise the Lord (Psalm 117)

Praise the Lord all you nations
extol him all you peoples
for great is his love for us

Praise the Lord he is faithful
His love endures for ever
and great is his love for us

Sing a song of praise to God enthroned on High
Bow before the King of the angels

His mercy and His love his justice will be known
lift a song of praise to the Lord

Boldly shout his praise for he has rescued us
Sin and death no more can enslave us

His beauty and his power displayed at Calvary
lift a song of praise to the Lord

and great is his love for us

Apostle’s Creed

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, the Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord: who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell.  The third day he rose from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sits on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from there he shall come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting.  Amen

confessing our sin

God the Spirit reminds us that God the Father has saved us through the righteous life and sacrificial death of Christ the Son – and in faith we rest on his gracious interest to renew us yet again.

we hear and confess | Matthew 5:2-12

(leader) Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

(all) But we have been proud in spirit, inflated with pride in our self-sufficiency.  We have forgotten how needy we are.  Lord, have mercy.

(leader) Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.

(all) But we have not mourned over our sin, instead we have insulated ourselves from pain, need, loneliness, and suffering.  Lord, have mercy.

(leader) Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.

(all) But we have valued toughness over gentleness.  We are concerned with self rather than our brothers and sisters and neighbors.  Lord, have mercy.

(leader) Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.

(all) But we have hungered after pleasures, prestige, and possessions in this temporary world.  Lord, have mercy.

(leader) Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy.

(all) But we have often presided as harsh judges over the lives of others.  We have been quick to place blame on anyone but ourselves.  Lord, have mercy.

(leader) Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.

(all) But we have defiled our hearts with idols of our choosing, doubting that God will keep his Word and promises.  We are impure.  Lord, have mercy.

(leader) Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.  (leader) But we are often at war with others.  We create strife rather than safety.  Lord, have mercy.

(all) Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

(leader) But we have often retreated from the disapproval of others.  We have sought to please the world, afraid of rejection.  We regard rejection for the gospel as a burden rather than an honor.  Lord, have mercy.

SONG: I Will Sing Praise to the Lord

I will sing praise to God
He has lifted me up
He heard my cry for help
And He filled my cup

His favor extends for a lifetime
His grace gives me strength each day
My soul shall sing His praise
Forever more

I’ll put my trust in Him
God my refuge and strength
For when my life seems lost
He will show me the way

My soul shall sing His praise
Forever more

declaration | 1 John 1:9

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness!

consecrated by the Word

God declares the finished gospel of his Son, and continues his powerful, internal work of  change/consecration by his Spirit.

sermon |  Comfort From the Storm • book of Job | John Marcott

we respond | SONG: Father Long Before Creation

Father long before creation
Thou hadst chosen us in love
And that love so deep, so moving
Draws us close to Christ above

Still it keeps us, still it keeps us
Firmly fixed in Christ alone

Though the world may change it’s fashion
Yet our God is e’er the same
His compassion and His cov’nant
Through all ages will remain

God’s own children, God’s own children
Must for ever praise His name.

God’s compassion is my story
Is my boasting all the day
Mercy free and never failing
Moves my will, directs my way

God so loved us, God so loved us
That His only Son He gave.

Loving Father now before Thee
We will ever praise Thy love
And our songs will sound unceasing
‘Til we reach our home above

Giving glory, giving glory
To our God and to the Lamb

Giving glory, giving glory
To our God and to the Lamb

SONG: Alas! And Did My Savior Bleed

Alas and did my Savior bleed
And did my Sovereign die
Would He devote that sacred head
For such a worm as I

Was it for crimes that I had done
He groaned upon the tree
Amazing pity! grace unknown
And love beyond degree

At the cross, at the cross
where I first saw the light
And the burden of
my heart rolled away

It was there by faith
I received my sight
And now I am happy all the day

Well might the sun in darkness hide
And shut his glories in
When Christ, the mighty Maker died
For man the creature’s sin

Thus might I hide my blushing face
While His dear cross appears
Dissolve my heart in thankfulness
And melt my eyes to tears

But drops of grief can ne’er repay
The debt of love I owe
Here, Lord, I give my self away
’Tis all that I can do

compelled to go out

God blesses us and charges us go out and extend his kingdom into the broken world around us, making disciples of all nations
