worship as communal exchange

called to come in

God comes near and calls his people out of the world, and takes hold of us and brings us into the community of Himself.

SONG: Come Thou Almighty King

Come, thou Almighty King
Help us thy name to sing
Help us to praise
Father, all glorious
O’er all victorious
Come, and reign over us Ancient of days

Come, thou Incarnate Word
Gird on thy mighty sword
Our prayer attend
Come and thy people bless
And give thy Word success
Spirit of holiness on us descend

Come, Holy Comforter
Thy sacred witness bear
In this glad hour
Thou who almighty art
Now rule in every heart
And ne’er from us depart Spirit of power

To the great One in Three
Eternal praises be
Hence evermore
His sovereign majesty
May we in glory see
And to eternity love and adore

we hear | Luke 1:68

(leader) – Praise God.  Praise him in his sanctuary.  Praise him in his mighty heavens. Praise him for his mighty deeds.  Praise him according to his excellent greatness.

(all) – Let everything that has breath praise the Lord!

SONG: Praise the Lord (Psalm 117)

Praise the Lord all you nations
extol him all you peoples
for great is his love for us

Praise the Lord he is faithful
His love endures for ever
and great is his love for us

Sing a song of praise to God enthroned on High
Bow before the King of the angels

His mercy and His love his justice will be known
lift a song of praise to the Lord

Boldly shout his praise for he has rescued us
Sin and death no more can enslave us

His beauty and his power displayed at Calvary
lift a song of praise to the Lord

The Apostle’s Creed

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, the Creator of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord: who was conceived of the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He arose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty, whence He shall come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy *catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen. (*universal)

confessing our sin

God the Spirit reminds us that God the Father has saved us through the righteous life and sacrificial death of Christ the Son – and in faith we rest on his gracious interest to renew us yet again.

we hear and confess | Romans 3

O God, by our experience we confirm your Word, that none is righteous – no, not one.  No one seeks for You – not one.  All have turned aside; together we have become worthless; No one does good – not one.  Our throats are like an open grave; we use our tongues to deceive.  Our mouths are full of curses and bitterness.  Our feet are swift to hate and shed blood; in our paths are ruin and misery, and the way to peace we have not known.  There is often no fear of God before our eyes.  For we all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God.  Have mercy on us, sinners, O God.  Show us again that Christ has become our righteousness even as he became the curse of our sin – all for your glory and our salvation, May we live in gratitude for a salvation we do not deserve –  no, not one of us.  Amen.

we rest | SONG: O Great God

O great God of highest heav’n
occupy my lowly heart
Own it all and reign supreme
conquer every rebel pow’r

Let no vice or sin remain
that resists Your holy war
You have loved and purchased me
make me Yours forever more

Blinded by my sin
had no ears to hear Your voice
did not know Your love within
had no taste for heaven’s joys

Then Your Spirit gave me life
opened up Your Word to me
through the gospel of Your Son
gave me endless hope and peace

Help me now to live a life
that’s dependent on Your grace
Keep my heart and guard my soul
from the evils that I face

You are worthy to be praised
with my every thought and deed
O great God of highest heav’n
glorify Your Name through me

You are worthy to be praised
with my every thought and deed
O great God of highest heav’n
glorify Your Name through me

declaration | Psalm 32:1-2

(leader) – Blessed is the one whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered.

(all) – Blessed is the one against whom the Lord counts no iniquity!

consecrated by Word

God declares the finished gospel of his Son, and continues his powerful, internal work of  change/consecration by his Spirit.

we hear | The Effect of Being in Christ  •  Philippians 2:1-11

we respond | SONG: And Can It Be

And can it be, that I should gain
An int’rest in the Saviour’s blood?
Died He for me, who caused His pain?
For me, who Him to death pursued?

Amazing love! How can it be,
That thou, my God, shouldst die for me?
Amazing love! How can it be,
That thou, my God, shouldst die for me?

He left His Father’s throne above,
So free, so infinite His grace.
Emptied Himself of all but love,
And bled for Adam’s helpless race.

‘Tis mercy all, immense and free;
For, O my God, it found out me!
Amazing love! How can it be,
That thou, my God, shouldst die for me?

Long my imprison’d spirit lay,
Fast bound in sin and nature’s night;
Thine eye diffused a quick’ning ray,
I woke, the dungeon flamed with light;

My chains fell off, my heart was free,
I rose, went forth, and followed Thee.
Amazing love! How can it be,
That thou, my God, shouldst die for me?

No condemnation now I dread;
Jesus, and all in Him, is mine!
Alive in Him, my living Head,
And clothed with righteousness divine.

Bold I approach th’eternal throne,
And claim the crown, through Christ, my own.
Amazing love! How can it be,
That thou, my God, shouldst die for me?

SONG: The Wonderful Cross

When I survey the wondrous cross
On which the Prince of Glory died

My richest gain I count but loss
And pour contempt on all my pride

See from his head, his hands, his feet
Sorrow and love flow mingled down

Did ever such love and sorrow meet
Or thorns compose so rich a crown

O the wonderful cross, O the wonderful cross
Bids me come and die
and find that I may truly live

O the wonderful cross, O the wonderful cross
All who gather here by grace draw near
and bless Your name

Were the whole realm of nature mine
That were an offering far too small

Love so amazing, so divine
Demands my soul, my life, my all

compelled to go out

benediction | Colossians 1

Now may he who has rescued us from the domain of darkness, and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son, fill you with all knowledge so that you will walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, to please him in all respects, bearing fruit in every good work, increasing in the knowledge and wisdom of God.
