worship as communal exchangeLiturgy image

called to come in

God comes near and calls his people out of the world, and takes hold of us and brings us into the community of Himself.

SONG: Praise to the Lord the Almighty

Praise to the Lord, the Almighty
The King of creation
O my soul, praise Him
For He is thy health and salvation

All ye who hear
Now to His temple draw near
Praise Him in glad adoration

Praise to the Lord! Who o’er all things
so wondrously reigneth
Shelters thee under His wings
Yea, so gently sustaineth

Hast thou not seen
How your desires all have been
Granted in what He ordaineth

Praise to the Lord, who doth prosper
thy work and defend thee
Surely His goodness and mercy
here daily attend thee

Ponder anew
What the Almighty can do
If with His love He befriend thee

Praise to the Lord! O let all that is
in me adore Him
All that hath life and breath, come now
with praises before Him

Let the Amen
sound from His people again
Gladly for aye we adore Him

we hear | Ezra 3:11-13

(leader) [“The people could not distinguish the sound of the joyful shout from the sound of the people’s weeping… and the sound was heard far away.”] And all the people shouted with a great shout when they praised the Lord!  And they sang responsively,

(People) For he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever toward his people!

we respond | SONG: Jesus I Come

Out of my bondage, sorrow and night
Jesus, I come; Jesus I come
Into Thy freedom, gladness and light
Jesus, I come to Thee

Out of my sickness into Thy health
Out of my wanting and into Thy wealth
Out of my sin and into Thyself
Jesus, I come to Thee

Out of my shameful failure and loss
Jesus, I come; Jesus, I come
Into the glorious gain of Thy cross
Jesus, I come to Thee

Out of earth’s sorrows into Thy balm
Out of life’s storms and into Thy calm
Out of distress into jubilant psalm
Jesus, I come to Thee

Out of unrest and arrogant pride
Jesus, I come; Jesus, I come
Into Thy blessed will to abide
Jesus, I come to Thee

Out of myself to dwell in Thy love
Out of despair into raptures above
Upward forever on wings like a dove
Jesus, I come to Thee

Out of the fear and dread of the tomb
Jesus, I come; Jesus, I come
Into the joy and light of Thy home
Jesus, I come to Thee

Out of the depths of ruin untold
Into the peace of Thy sheltering fold
Ever Thy glorious face to behold
Jesus, I come to Thee

Jesus, I come to Thee

confessing our sin

God the Spirit reminds us that God the Father has saved us through the righteous life and sacrificial death of Christ the Son – and in faith we rest on his gracious interest to renew us yet again.

we hear | Psalm 14:1-5, Luke 11:29

The fool says in his heart, “There is no God.” They are corrupt, they do abominable deeds, there is none who does good.  The LORD looks down from heaven on the children of man, to see if there are any who understand, who seek after God.  They have all turned aside; together they have become corrupt; there is none who does good, not even one.  Have they no knowledge, all the evildoers who eat up my people as they eat bread and do not call upon the LORD?  There they are in great terror, for God is with the generation of the righteous. When the crowds were increasing, he began to say, “This generation is an evil generation.”

we confess | Valley of Vision Prayer

Father, we are sadly harassed by doubts, fears, unbelief and felt spiritual darkness.  Our hearts are full of evil surmisings and disquietude. Give us peace of soul, enlargement of mind, and morning joy that comes after night heaviness.  Grant that we may welcome your humbling in private, so that we might enjoy you in public.  Give us a mountain top as high as the valley is low.  Your grace can melt the worst sinner, and I am as vile as he.  By the righteousness of Jesus who suffered the full cost of our nagging sin, make us into monuments of mercy and trophies of your redeeming power.  In our distress may we not forget that this is your kingdom promise.  Amen.

we rest | SONG: Satisfied

All my life long I had panted
for a drink from some cool spring
that I hoped would quench the burning
of the thirst I felt within

Hallelujah He has found me
the One my soul so long has craved
Jesus satisfies all my longings
through his blood I now am saved

Feeding on the filth around me
’till my strength was almost gone
Longed my soul for something better
only still to hunger on

Hallelujah He has found me
the One my soul so long has craved
Jesus satisfies all my longings
through his blood I now am saved

Poor I was and sought for riches
something that would satisfy
But the dust I gathered ’round me
only mocked my soul’s sad cry

Hallelujah He has found me
the One my soul so long has craved
Jesus satisfies all my longings
through his blood I now am saved

Well of water ever springing
Bread of Life so rich and free
Untold wealth that never faileth
my Redeemer is to me

Hallelujah He has found me
the One my soul so long has craved
Jesus satisfies all my longings
through his blood I now am saved

Hallelujah He has found me
the One my soul so long has craved
Jesus satisfies all my longings
through his blood I now am saved

declaration | Psalm 32:10

(leader) Be glad in the Lord, and rejoice, O you righteous!

(all) Shout for joy, all you upright in heart!

consecrated by the Word

God declares the finished gospel of his Son, and continues his powerful, internal work of  change/consecration by his Spirit.

sermon |  Gospel Humility • James 4:6-12 | David Royes

we respond | SONG: Jesus Paid it All

I hear the Savior say
Thy strength indeed is small
Child of weakness watch and pray
Find in Me thine all in all

Jesus paid it all
All to Him I owe
Sin had left a crimson stain
He washed it white as snow

Lord, now indeed I find
Thy power and Thine alone
Can change the leper’s spots
And melt the heart of stone

For nothing good have I
whereby Thy grace to claim
I’ll wash my garments white
In the blood of Calv’ry’s Lamb

And when before the throne
I stand in Him complete
Jesus died my soul to save
My lips shall still repeat

SONG: Jesus I My Cross Have Taken

Jesus, I my cross have taken
all to leave and follow Thee
Destitute, despised, forsaken
Thou from hence my all shall be

Perish every fond ambition
all I’ve sought or hoped or known
Yet how rich is my condition
God and Heaven are still mine own

Let the world despise and leave me
they have left my Savior too
Human hearts and looks deceive me
Thou art not like them untrue

O while Thou dost smile upon me
God of wisdom, love and might
Foes may hate and friends disown me
show Thy face and all is bright

Man may trouble and distress me
’twill but drive me to Thy breast
Life with trials hard may press me
heaven will bring me sweeter rest

Oh, ’tis not in grief to harm me
while Thy love is left to me
Oh, ’twere not in joy to charm me
were that joy unmixed with Thee

Go, then, earthly fame and treasure
Come disaster, scorn and pain
In Thy service, pain is pleasure
with Thy favor, loss is gain

I have called Thee, Abba, Father
I have stayed my heart on Thee
Storms may howl, and clouds may gather
all must work for good to me

Soon shall close thy earthly mission
swift shall pass thy pilgrim days
Hope shall change to glad fruition
faith to sight, and prayer to praise

Go then earthly fame and treasure
Come disaster, scorn and pain
In thy service pain is pleasure
With thy favor, loss is gain

I have called thee, “Abba, Father”
I have stayed my heart on thee
Storms may howl and clouds may gather
All must work for good to me

Soul then know Thy full salvation
rise o’er sin and fear and care
Joy to find in every station
something still to do or bear

Think what Spirit dwells within thee
Think what Father’s smiles are thine
Think that Jesus died to win thee
child of heaven, canst thou repine

Haste thee on from grace to glory
armed by faith, and winged by prayer
Heaven’s eternal days before thee
God’s own hand shall guide us there

compelled to go out

God blesses us and charges us go out and extend his kingdom into the broken world around us, making disciples of all nations
