worship as communal exchangeLiturgy image

called to come in

God comes near and calls his people out of the world, and takes hold of us and brings us into the community of Himself.

we hear | Ephesians 1:3-14

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places, even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him. In love he predestined us for adoption as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will, to the praise of his glorious grace, with which he has blessed us in the Beloved. In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace, 8which he lavished upon us, in all wisdom and insight making known to us the mystery of his will, according to his purpose, which he set forth in Christ as a plan for the fullness of time, to unite all things in him, things in heaven and things on earth.

In him we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to the purpose of him who works all things according to the counsel of his will, so that we who were the first to hope in Christ might be to the praise of his glory. In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of his glory.

we respond | SONG: You Are Welcome Here

Holy Spirit of God draw near
You are wanted and welcome here

May Your presence be loved and feared
You are wanted and welcome here

There is no greater thing we could ask for
than the presence of the Lord

Oh God let freedom reign
Your Spirit sets us free
We want to be where You are

Holy Spirit of God draw near
You are wanted and welcome here

May Your presence be loved and feared
You are wanted and welcome here

There is no greater thing we could ask for
than the presence of the Lord

Oh God let freedom reign
Your Spirit sets us free
We want to be where You are

There is no greater thing we could ask for
than the presence of the Lord

Oh God let freedom reign
Your Spirit sets us free
We want to be where You are

confessing our sin

God the Spirit reminds us that God the Father has saved us through the righteous life and sacrificial death of Christ the Son – and in faith we rest on his gracious interest to renew us yet again.

we hear | 1 Corinthians 2:11-12, Galatians 5:16-25

For who knows a person’s thoughts except the spirit of that person, which is in him? So also no one comprehends the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. Now we have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might understand the things freely given us by God.

But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed to each other, to keep you from doing the things you want to do. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law. Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.  And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.

If we live by the Spirit, let us also walk by the Spirit.

we confess | from Valley of Vision Prayers

O God the Holy Spirit, You who proceed from the Father and the Son, have mercy on me.  Move, I pray, on my disordered heart.  Take away the sickness of my unruly desires and hateful lusts.  Lift the mist and darkness of unbelief.  Brighten my soul with the pure light of truth.  Take of the things of Christ and show them to my soul.  Lead me to the cross and show me his wounds.  Help me to find in his death the reality and immensity of his love. Help me to find in his life the completion of my righteousness.  O Holy Spirit, deepen in me these things.  Write them on my heart, that my walk may be sin-loathing and Christ-loving.  Amen.

we rest | SONG: What the Lord Has Done In Me

Let the weak say I am strong
Let the poor say I am rich
Let the blind say I can see
It’s what the Lord has done in me

Hosanna Hosanna
To the Lamb that was slain
Hosanna Hosanna
Jesus died and rose again

Into the river I will wade
There my sins are washed away
From the heavens mercy streams
Of the Savior’s love for me

I will rise from waters deep
Into the saving arms of God
I will sing salvation songs
Jesus Christ has set me free

declaration | Psalm 32:10

(leader) Be glad in the Lord, and rejoice, O you righteous!

(all) Shout for joy, all you upright in heart!

consecrated by the Word

God declares the finished gospel of his Son, and continues his powerful, internal work of  change/consecration by his Spirit.

sermon |  Longings Fulfilled • Proverbs  13:19 | David Royes

we respond | SONG: Hallelujah for the Cross

Up to the hill of Calvary
My Savior went courageously
and there he bled and died for me
Hallelujah for the cross

And on that day the world was changed
A final, perfect lamb was slain
Let earth and heaven now proclaim
Hallelujah for the cross

Hallelujah for the war He fought
Love has won, Death has lost
Hallelujah for the souls He bought
Hallelujah for the cross

What good I’ve done could never save
My debt too great for deeds to pay
But God, my Savior, made a way
Hallelujah for the cross

A slave to sin, my life was bound
But all my chains fell to the ground
When Jesus’ blood came flowing down
Hallelujah for the cross

Hallelujah for the war He fought
Love has won, Death has lost
Hallelujah for the souls He bought
Hallelujah for the cross

And when I breathe my final breath
I’ll have no need to fear that rest
This hope will guide me into death
Hallelujah for the cross

Hallelujah for the war He fought
Love has won, Death has lost
Hallelujah for the souls He bought
Hallelujah for the cross

Hallelujah for the war He fought
Love has won, Death has lost
Hallelujah for the souls He bought
Hallelujah for the cross

hallelujah for the cross
hallelujah for the cross
hallelujah for the cross

SONG: Father, Long Before Creation

Father long before creation
Thou hadst chosen us in love
And that love so deep, so moving
Draws us close to Christ above

Still it keeps us, still it keeps us
Firmly fixed in Christ alone

Though the world may change it’s fashion
Yet our God is e’er the same
His compassion and His cov’nant
Through all ages will remain

God’s own children, God’s own children
Must for ever praise His name.

God’s compassion is my story
Is my boasting all the day
Mercy free and never failing
Moves my will, directs my way

God so loved us, God so loved us
That His only Son He gave.

Loving Father now before Thee
We will ever praise Thy love
And our songs will sound unceasing
‘Til we reach our home above

Giving glory, giving glory
To our God and to the Lamb

Giving glory, giving glory
To our God and to the Lamb

compelled to go out

God blesses us and charges us go out and extend his kingdom into the broken world around us, making disciples of all nations
