worship as communal exchange

called to come in

God comes near and calls his people out of the world, and takes hold of us and brings us into the community of Himself.

SONG: Praise the Lord – Psalm 117

Praise the Lord all you nations
extol him all you peoples
for great is his love for us

Praise the Lord he is faithful
His love endures for ever
and great is his love for us

Sing a song of praise to God enthroned on High
Bow before the King of the angels

His mercy and His love his justice will be known
lift a song of praise to the Lord

Boldly shout his praise for he has rescued us
Sin and death no more can enslave us

His beauty and his power displayed at Calvary
lift a song of praise to the Lord

and great is his love for us

we hear | Psalm 106

(leader) Praise the Lord!  Oh, give thanks to the Lord, for he is good! For his mercy endures forever.

(all) Who can utter the mighty acts of the Lord?  Who can declare all his praise?

SONG: O Great God

O great God of highest heav’n
occupy my lowly heart
Own it all and reign supreme
conquer every rebel pow’r

Let no vice or sin remain
that resists Your holy war
You have loved and purchased me
make me Yours forever more

I was blinded by my sin
had no ears to hear Your voice
did not know Your love within
had no taste for heaven’s joys

Then Your Spirit gave me life
opened up Your Word to me
through the gospel of Your Son
gave me endless hope and peace

Help me now to live a life
that’s dependent on Your grace
Keep my heart and guard my soul
from the evils that I face

You are worthy to be praised
with my every thought and deed
O great God of highest heav’n
glorify Your Name through me

You are worthy to be praised
with my every thought and deed
O great God of highest heav’n
glorify Your Name through me

confessing our sin

God the Spirit reminds us that God the Father has saved us through the righteous life and sacrificial death of Christ the Son – and in faith we rest on his gracious interest to renew us yet again.

we hear & confess | Isaiah 66.2; James 2:10; Exodus 20

(leader) On this one will I look: on him who is poor and of a contrite spirit and trembles at my word. For whoever keeps the whole law but fails in one point has become accountable for [breaking] all of it.

(all) Father, forgive us!  our hearts have consistently broken your whole law, by…

worshiping other gods by giving our whole self to creation, not Creator

making innumerable things and desires into idols to which we bow

taking your name in vain by carelessly speaking to you, for you, about you not remembering, revering or prioritizing physical/spiritual Sabbath rest not honoring our father and mother and every authority you have placed over us murderously hating and wounding, even killing, our enemies, acquaintances and friends regularly committing physical and mental adultery in a sexually charged world stealing from your glory and your image bearers by being takers, not givers, of this world

blatantly lying, bearing false witness, or exaggerating when we speak

continually coveting the life, possessions, and persons you have given our neighbors

(leader) By Christ alone, who suffered and died for our hearts’ inability (and body’s failure) to keep your whole law, have mercy on us and receive our repentance.  Amen.

we rest | SONG: Jesus What a Friend for Sinners

Jesus! what a Friend for sinners
Jesus! Lover of my soul
Friends may fail me, foes assail me
He, my Savior, makes me whole

Hallelujah what a Savior
Hallelujah what a Friend
Saving, helping, keeping, loving
He is with me to the end

Jesus what a Strength in weakness
Let me hide myself in Him
Tempted, tried, and sometimes failing
He, my Strength, my vict’ry wins

Jesus what a help in sorrow
While the billows o’er me roll
Even when my heart is breaking
He, my Comfort, helps my soul

Jesus! what a guide and keeper
While the tempest still is high
Storms about me, night o’ertakes me
He, my Pilot, hears my cry

Jesus I do now receive Him
More than all in Him I find
He hath granted me forgiveness
I am His, and He is mine

declaration | 1 John 1:9

(leader)  If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness!

consecrated by the Word

God declares the finished gospel of his Son, and continues his powerful, internal work of  change/consecration by his Spirit.

sermon | Persistent Prayer •  Luke 18:1-8

we respond | SONG: By Faith

By faith we see the hand of God
In the light of creation’s grand design

In the lives of those who prove His faithfulness
Who walk by faith and not by sight

By faith our fathers roamed the earth
With the power of His promise in their hearts

Of a holy city built by God’s own hand
A place where peace and justice reign

We will stand as children of the promise
We will fix our eyes on Him our soul’s reward

Till the race is finished and the work is done
We’ll walk by faith and not by sight

By faith the prophets saw a day
When the longed-for Messiah would appear

With the power to break the
chains of sin and death
And rise triumphant from the grave

By faith the church was called to go
In the power of the Spirit to the lost

To deliver captives and to preach good news
In every corner of the earth

We will stand as children of the promise
We will fix our eyes on Him our soul’s reward

Till the race is finished and the work is done
We’ll walk by faith and not by sight

By faith this mountain shall be moved
And the power of the gospel shall prevail

For we know in Christ all things are possible
For all who call upon His name

We will stand as children of the promise
We will fix our eyes on Him our soul’s reward

Till the race is finished and the work is done
We’ll walk by faith and not by sight

We will stand as children of the promise
We will fix our eyes on Him our soul’s reward

Till the race is finished and the work is done
We’ll walk by faith and not by sight

We’ll walk by faith and not by sight

SONG: Come Thou Everlasting Spirit

Come, Thou everlasting Spirit
Bring to every thankful mind
All the Savior’s dying merit
All His sufferings for mankind

Come, Thou Witness of His dying
Come, Remembrancer divine
Let us feel Thy power, applying
Christ to every soul, and mine

True Recorder of His passion
Now the living faith impart
Now reveal His great salvation
Preach His Gospel to our heart

Let us groan Thine inward groaning
Look on Him we pierced, and grieve
All receiving the grace atoning
All the sprinkled blood receive

Come, Thou Witness of His dying
Come, Remembrancer divine
Let us feel Thy power, applying
Christ to every soul, and mine

compelled to go out

God blesses us and charges us go out and extend his kingdom into the broken world around us, making disciples of all nations.

benediction | Thessalonians 5:23-24

I am the vine, you are the branches.  Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit for apart from me you can do nothing.  By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit and so prove to be my disciples.
