worship as communal exchangeLiturgy image

called to come in

God comes near and calls his people out of the world, and takes hold of us and brings us into the community of Himself.

Song: Praise to the Lord the Almighty

we hear | Psalm 95

“Seek the LORD while he may be found; call upon him while he is near; let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts; let him return to the LORD, that he may have compassion on him, and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon. For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the LORD. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts. “For as the rain and the snow come down from heaven and do not return there but water the earth, making it bring forth and sprout,  giving seed to the sower and bread to the eater, so shall my word be that goes out from my mouth; it shall not return to me empty, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose, and shall succeed in the thing for which I sent it.

confessing our sin

God the Spirit reminds us that God the Father has saved us through the righteous life and sacrificial death of Christ the Son – and in faith we rest on his gracious interest to renew us yet again.

we hear | 2 Timothy 4:1-4

I charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and by his appearing and his kingdom: preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, and exhort, with complete patience and teaching. For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths.

we confess | from Valley of Vision book of Puritan Prayers

My Father, in a world of created changeable things, Christ and his Word alone remain unshaken.  Yet I am allured by the all things unstable, temporary and ticklish.   Forgive me!  O to forsake all creatures, and to rest on Christ the foundation!  My sin is not so much this or that particular evil, but my continual separation, disunion, distance from you.  I have a loose spirit towards you.  O you who have the hearts of all men in your hand, form my heart according to your Word, according to the image of your Son.  Make Christ the Word, and his Word, be my strength and comfort.  Amen.

we rest | SONG: From Depths of Woe

declaration | 2 Thessalonians 3:3

But the Lord is faithful. He will establish you and guard you against the evil one.

consecrated by the Word

God declares the finished gospel of his Son, and continues his powerful, internal work of  change/consecration by his Spirit.

sermon |  I Am Heard • Psalm 6:1-10 | John Marcott

we respond | SONG: I Will Sing Praise to God

SONG: Come All Ye Pining
