worship as communal exchange

called to come in

God comes near and calls his people out of the world, and takes hold of us and brings us into the community of Himself.

SONG: I Sing the Mighty Power of God

I sing the mighty power of God
That made the mountains rise
That spread the flowing seas abroad
And built the lofty skies

I sing the wisdom that ordained
The sun to rule the day
The moon shines full at His command
And all the stars obey

I sing the goodness of the Lord
That filled the earth with food
He formed the creatures with His Word
And then pronounced them good

Lord! how Thy wonders are displayed
Where’er I turn mine eye
If I survey the ground I tread
Or gaze upon the sky

There’s not a plant or flower below
But makes Thy glories known
And clouds arise and tempests blow
By order from Thy throne

Creatures that borrow life from Thee
Are subject to Thy care
There’s not a place where we can flee
But God is present there

we hear | Psalm 145:14-18

(leader) Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised! His greatness is unsearchable!

(all) The Lord upholds all who are falling and raises up all who are bowed down. The eyes of all look to you, and you give them their food in due season.

(leader) O Lord, you open your hand; you satisfy the desire of every living thing.  You are righteous in all your ways. You are kind in all your works. You are near to all who call on you, to all who call on you in truth!

SONG: How Great Thou Art

Oh Lord my God
When I in awesome wonder
Consider all
The worlds Thy hands have made

I see the stars
I hear the rolling thunder
Thy power throughout
The universe displayed

Then sings my soul
My Savior God to Thee
How great Thou art.
How great Thou art

Then sings my soul
My Savior God to Thee
How great Thou art
How great Thou art

How great Thou art

And when I think
That God, His Son not sparing
Sent Him to die
I scarce can take it in

That on the cross
My burden gladly bearing
He bled and died
To take away my sin

Then sings my soul
My Savior God to Thee
How great Thou art
How great Thou art

Then sings my soul
My Savior God to Thee
How great Thou art
How great Thou art

How great Thou art

When Christ shall come
With shouts of acclamation
And take me home
What joy shall fill my heart

Then I shall bow
In humble adoration
And there proclaim
My God how great Thou art

Then sings my soul
My Savior God to Thee
How great Thou art.
How great Thou art

Then sings my soul
My Savior God to Thee
How great Thou art
How great Thou art

How great Thou art
How great Thou art

confessing our sin

God the Spirit reminds us that God the Father has saved us through the righteous life and sacrificial death of Christ the Son – and in faith we rest on his gracious interest to renew us yet again.

we hear | Hebrews 4 and Isaiah 30: 15, 18

Let us therefore strive to enter [God’s] rest, so that no one may fall by the same sort of disobedience.  For the Word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and spirit, of joints and marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.  And no creature is hidden from its sight, but all are naked and exposed to the eyes of him to whom we must give and account.

For thus says the Lord, the Holy One of Israel: In returning and rest you shall be saved; in quietness and in trust shall be your strength. But you were unwilling…  Therefore the Lord waits to be gracious to you, and therefore he exalts himself to show mercy to you.

we confess | Valley of Vision Prayer

Lord Jesus, I sin.  Grant that I may never cease grieving because of it.  Kill my envy, command my tongue, trample down self.  Give me grace to be holy, kind, gentle, pure, peaceable, to live for you and not myself, to copy your words, acts, spirit, to be transformed into your likeness, to live entirely to thy glory. Deliver me from attachments to things unclean, from wrong associations, from the predominance of evil things, from the sugar of sin as well as its gall, that with self-loathing, deep contrition, and earnest heart searching I may come to thee, cast myself on thee, trust in thee, cry to thee, be delivered by thee.

If I sin willfully, grievously, tormentedly, in grace take away my mourning and give me music; remove my sackcloth and clothe me with beauty, then give me summer weather as a Christian.  Amen.

we rest | SONG: Mercy Speaks

Mercy Speaks By Jesus’ Blood
Hear and Sing, Ye Sons of God
Justice satisfied indeed
Christ has full atonement made

Jesus’ blood speaks loud and sweet
Here all Deity can meet
And without a jarring voice
Welcome Zion to rejoice

Welcome Zion to rejoice

All her debts were cast on Me
And she must and shall go free
All her debts were cast on Me
And she must and shall go free

Peace of conscience, peace with God
We obtain through Jesus blood
Jesus blood speaks solid rest
We believe and we are blest

We believe and we are blest

Should the law against her roar
Jesus blood still speaks with power
All her debts were cas on Me
And she must and shall go free
She must and shall go free

And she must and shall go free
And she must and shall go free
And she must and shall go free

declaration | Psalm 32:1-2

(leader) Blessed is the one whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered.

(all) Blessed is the one against whom the Lord counts no iniquity!

consecrated by the Word

God declares the finished gospel of his Son, and continues his powerful, internal work of  change/consecration by his Spirit.

sermon | Taking the Gospel Home •  Titus 2:1-11

we respond | SONG: At the Name of Jesus

At the name of Jesus
every knee shall bow
Every tongue confess Him
King of glory now

‘Tis the Father’s pleasure
we should call him Lord
Who from the beginning
was the mighty Word

At His voice creation
sprang at once to sight
All the angels faces
all the hosts of light

Thrones and dominations
stars upon their way
All the heavenly orders
in their great array

Humbled for a season
to receive a name
From the lips of sinners
unto whom He came

Faithfully He bore it
spotless to the last
Brought it back victorious
when from death He passed

In our hearts enthrone Him
there let Him subdue
All that is not holy
all that is not true

Crown Him as your Captain
in temptation’s hour
Let His will enfold you
in its light and power

Brothers, this Lord Jesus
shall return again
With His Father’s glory
o’re the Earth to reign

For all earthly powers
meet upon His brow
And our hearts confess Him
King of glory now

SONG: To God Be the Glory

To God be the glory
great things He has done
So loved He the world
that He gave us His Son

Who yielded His life an atonement for sin
And opened the life gate that all may go in

Praise the Lord, praise the Lord
Let the earth hear His voice
Praise the Lord, praise the Lord
Let the people rejoice

O come to the Father
through Jesus the Son
And give Him the glory
great things He has done

O perfect redemption the purchase of blood
To every believer the promise of God

The vilest offender who truly believes
That moment from Jesus a pardon receives
Praise the Lord, praise the Lord
Let the earth hear His voice
Praise the Lord, praise the Lord
Let the people rejoice

O come to the Father
through Jesus the Son
And give Him the glory
great things He has done

Great things He has taught us
great things He has done
And great our rejoicing
through Jesus the Son

But purer, and higher
and greater will be
Our wonder, our transport
when Jesus we see.

Praise the Lord, praise the Lord
Let the earth hear His voice
Praise the Lord, praise the Lord
Let the people rejoice

O come to the Father
through Jesus the Son
And give Him the glory
great things He has done

compelled to go out
