worship as communal exchange

called to come in

God comes near and calls his people out of the world, and takes hold of us and brings us into the community of Himself.

SONG: Across the Lands

You’re the Word of God the Father
From before the world began
Ev’ry star and ev’ry planet has
Been fashioned by your hand

All creation holds together
By the power of your voice
Let the skies declare your glory;
Let the land and seas rejoice

You’re the Author of creation
You’re the Lord of ev’ry man
And Your cry of love
Rings out across the lands

Yet you left the gaze of angels
Came to seek and save the lost
And exchanged the joy of heaven
For the anguish of a cross

With a prayer you fed the hungry
With a word you calmed the sea
Yet how silently you suffered
That the guilty may go free

You’re the Author of creation
You’re the Lord of ev’ry man
And Your cry of love
Rings out across the lands

With a shout you rose victorious
Wresting vict’ry from the grave
And ascended into heaven
Leading captives in your way

Now you stand before the Father
Interceding for your own
From each tribe and tongue and nation
You are leading sinners home

You’re the Author of creation
You’re the Lord of ev’ry man
And Your cry of love
Rings out across the lands

You’re the Author of creation
You’re the Lord of ev’ry man
And Your cry of love
Rings out across the lands

we hear | Psalm 105

(leader) – Come, worship the Father, Son and Spirit! Come, in hope of eternal life, which God, who never lies, promised before the ages began!

(all) – Let those who fear the Lord say: His steadfast love endures forever! We give thanks to the Lord, for he is good!  His steadfast love endures forever!

SONG: God the Spirit

Holy fount of inspiration
by whose gift the great of old
Spoke the word of revelation
marvelous and manifold

God the Spirit we adore Thee
in the Triune Godhead One
One in love and power and glory
with the Father and the Son

Author of the new creation
giver of the second birth
may thy ceaseless renovation
cleanse our souls from stains of earth

When we wander Lord direct us
keep us in the Master’s way
Let Thy strong swift sword protect us
warring in the evil day

Shall the church now faint or fear
when the Comforter is near

we respond | Ephesians 4:4-13

There is one body, and one Spirit – just as you were called to one hope that belongs to your call – one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.  But the grace was given to each one of us according to the measure of Christ’s gift… And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for the building up of the body of Christ, until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ.

confessing our sin

God the Spirit reminds us that God the Father has saved us through the righteous life and sacrificial death of Christ the Son – and in faith we rest on his gracious interest to renew us yet again.

we hear and confess | Prayer adapted from Valley of Vision: a collection of Puritan Prayers and Devotions

O blessed Spirit, author of grace and comfort, come and work repentance in my soul.  Represent sin to me in its odious colors that I may hate it.  Melt my heart by the majesty and mercy of God; show me my ruined self and the help there is in him.  Teach me to behold my Creator, his ability to save, his arms outstretched.  Make me willing to be saved in this way, perceiving nothing in myself, but all in Jesus.  Help me not only to receive him, but to walk in him, depend upon him, commune with him, be conformed to him, follow him.  May I be saved by grace through faith, live by faith, feel the joy of faith, do the work of faith.  Perceiving nothing in myself, may I find in Christ wisdom, righteousness and redemption.  Amen.

we rest | SONG: Satisfied

All my life long I had panted
for a drink from some cool spring
that I hoped would quench the burning
of the thirst I felt within

Hallelujah He has found me
the One my soul so long has craved
Jesus satisfies all my longings
through his blood I now am saved

Feeding on the filth around me
’till my strength was almost gone
Longed my soul for something better
only still to hunger on

Hallelujah He has found me
the One my soul so long has craved
Jesus satisfies all my longings
through his blood I now am saved

Poor I was and sought for riches
something that would satisfy
But the dust I gathered ’round me
only mocked my soul’s sad cry

Hallelujah He has found me
the One my soul so long has craved
Jesus satisfies all my longings
through his blood I now am saved

Well of water ever springing
Bread of Life so rich and free
Untold wealth that never faileth
my Redeemer is to me

Hallelujah He has found me
the One my soul so long has craved
Jesus satisfies all my longings
through his blood I now am saved

declaration | 1 John 1:9

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

consecrated by the Word

God declares the finished gospel of his Son, and continues his powerful, internal work of  change/consecration by his Spirit.

we hear | The Christian’s Glow  •  Philippians 2:12-16

we respond | SONG: My Heart is Filled with Thankfulness

My heart is filled with thankfulness
To Him who bore my pain
Who plumbed the depths of my disgrace
And gave me life again

Who crushed my curse of sinfulness
And clothed me in His light
And wrote His law of righteousness
With pow’r upon my heart
My heart is filled with thankfulness
To Him who walks beside
Who floods my weaknesses with strength
And causes fears to fly

Whose ev’ry promise is enough
For ev’ry step I take
Sustaining me with arms of love
And crowning me with grace
My heart is filled with thankfulness
To him who reigns above
Whose wisdom is my perfect peace
Whose ev’ry thought is love

For ev’ry day I have on earth
Is given by the King
So I will give my life, my all
To love and follow him

SONG: By Faith

By faith we see the hand of God
In the light of creation’s grand design

In the lives of those who prove His faithfulness
Who walk by faith and not by sight

By faith our fathers roamed the earth
With the power of His promise in their hearts

Of a holy city built by God’s own hand
A place where peace and justice reign

We will stand as children of the promise
We will fix our eyes on Him our soul’s reward

Till the race is finished and the work is done
We’ll walk by faith and not by sight

By faith the prophets saw a day
When the longed-for Messiah would appear

With the power to break the
chains of sin and death
And rise triumphant from the grave

By faith the church was called to go
In the power of the Spirit to the lost

To deliver captives and to preach good news
In every corner of the earth

By faith this mountain shall be moved
And the power of the gospel shall prevail

For we know in Christ all things are possible
For all who call upon His name

We’ll walk by faith and not by sight

compelled to go out

God blesses us and charges us go out and extend his kingdom into the broken world around us, making disciples of all nations.

benediction | Titus 2:13

And now we wait for our blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, who gave himself to redeem us and to purify for himself a people for his own possession who are zealous for good works.  To God be the glory, Amen.
