worship as communal exchangeLiturgy image

called to come in

God comes near and calls his people out of the world, and takes hold of us and brings us into the community of Himself.

Song: A Mighty Fortress is Our God

A mighty fortress is our God
a bulwark never failing
Our helper He, amid the flood
of mortal ills prevailing

For still our ancient foe
doth seek to work us woe
His craft and power are great
and, armed with cruel hate
On earth is not his equal

Did we in our own strength confide
our striving would be losing
Were not the right Man on our side
the Man of God’s own choosing

Dost ask who that may be
Christ Jesus, it is He
Lord Sabaoth, His Name
from age to age the same
And He must win the battle

And though this world, with devils filled
should threaten to undo us
We will not fear, for God hath willed
His truth to triumph through us

The Prince of Darkness grim
we tremble not for him
His rage we can endure
for lo, his doom is sure
One little word shall fell him

That word above all earthly powers
no thanks to them, abideth
The Spirit and the gifts are ours
through Him Who with us sideth

Let goods and kindred go
this mortal life also
The body they may kill
God’s truth abideth still
His kingdom is forever

we hear | 2 Timothy 1:15, 17

(leader) The saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom we are the foremost!

(all) To the King of ages, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory forever and ever!

we respond | SONG: Immortal Invisible

Immortal, invisible God only wise
In light inaccessible hid from our eyes
Most blessed, most glorious the Ancient of Days
Almighty, victorious Thy great name we praise

Unresting, unhasting and silent as light
Nor wanting, nor wasting Thou rulest in might
Thy justice like mountains high soaring above
Thy clouds which are fountains of goodness and love

To all, life thou givest to both great and small
In all life thou livest the true life of all
We blossom and flourish as leaves on the tree
And wither and perish but naught changeth Thee

Thou reignest in glory thou dwellest in light
thine angels adore Thee all veiling their sight
All laud we would render O help us to see
’tis only the splendor of light hideth thee

Great Father of glory pure Father of light
Thine angels adore Thee all veiling their sight
All praise we would render O help us to see
‘Tis only the splendor of light hideth Thee

confessing our sin

God the Spirit reminds us that God the Father has saved us through the righteous life and sacrificial death of Christ the Son – and in faith we rest on his gracious interest to renew us yet again.

we hear | 2 Corinthians 5

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come. All this is from God, who through Christ reconciled us to himself… We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God. For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

we confess | from Valley of Vision Prayer

Blessed Spirit,  Come and work repentance in my soul.  Represent sin to me in its odious colors that I may hate it.  Melt my heart by the majesty and mercy of God; show me my ruined self and the help there is in him.  Make me willing to be saved in this way, perceiving nothing in myself, but all in Jesus, who became sin though he knew it not. He became my sin, and by grace I became his righteousness!  I believe, yet my unbelief!  May I daily be saved by grace through faith, live by faith, feel the joy of faith, do the work of faith.  Perceiving nothing in myself, may I find in Christ wisdom, righteousness and redemption!    Amen.

we rest | SONG: O Great God

O great God of highest heav’n
occupy my lowly heart
Own it all and reign supreme
conquer every rebel pow’r

Let no vice or sin remain
that resists Your holy war
You have loved and purchased me
make me Yours forever more

I was blinded by my sin
had no ears to hear Your voice
did not know Your love within
had no taste for heaven’s joys

Then Your Spirit gave me life
opened up Your Word to me
through the gospel of Your Son
gave me endless hope and peace

Help me now to live a life
that’s dependent on Your grace
Keep my heart and guard my soul
from the evils that I face

You are worthy to be praised
with my every thought and deed
O great God of highest heav’n
glorify Your Name through me

You are worthy to be praised
with my every thought and deed
O great God of highest heav’n
glorify Your Name through me

declaration | James 1:12

Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him.

consecrated by the Word

God declares the finished gospel of his Son, and continues his powerful, internal work of  change/consecration by his Spirit.

sermon |  Denying the Faith? • James 2:1-7 | David Royes

we respond | SONG: All I Have is Christ

I once was lost in darkest night
Yet thought I knew the way
The sin that promised joy and life
Had led me to the grave
I had no hope that You would own
A rebel to Your will
And if You had not loved me first
I would refuse You still

But as I ran my hell-bound race
Indifferent to the cost
You looked upon my helpless state
And led me to the cross
And I beheld God’s love displayed
You suffered in my place
You bore the wrath reserved for me
Now all I know is grace

Hallelujah! All I have is Christ
Hallelujah! Jesus is my life
Hallelujah! All I have is Christ
Hallelujah! Jesus is my life

Now, Lord, I would be Yours alone
And live so all might see
The strength to follow Your commands
Could never come from me
Oh Father, use my ransomed life
In any way You choose
And let my song forever be
My only boast is You

Hallelujah! All I have is Christ
Hallelujah! Jesus is my life
Hallelujah! All I have is Christ
Hallelujah! Jesus is my life

SONG: Come to the Feast

Go to the highways and hedges
go to the farthest of fields
Go and compel, the sick and the well
For our Father’s house will be filled

Go to the streets of the city
bring in the crippled and blind
All who would taste this banquet of grace
Must come and waste no more time

Come to the feast, come to the table
The great and the least, the rich and the poor
Come to the feast, come to the table
Come and hunger no more

In the robe of the lamb you’ll be covered
Dressed in his pure righteousness
For all of your guilt, his blood it was spilt
So come by your Father be blessed

Come to the feast, come to the table
The great and the least, the rich and the poor
Come to the feast, come to the table
Come and hunger no more

Come to the feast, come to the table
The great and the least, the rich and the poor
Come to the feast, come to the table
Come and hunger no more

compelled to go out
