For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

Hebrews 4:15-16

With a global pandemic, economic hardship, division, and injustice in the nation, we believe it is vital to call out to God for help. Therefore, the Elders have called for a day of Prayer and Fasting THIS Friday (June 12th).

If you would like to know more about the ‘why’ and ‘how’ of times of prayer and fasting, we encourage you to read this article: https://pcaga.org/united-prayer/a-guide-to-prayer-and-fasting/

It provides some particularly helpful advice for families.

Below are some resources and opportunities to help us make the most of the day.

Prayer Guide

You can find links to the prayer guide below. This includes Scripture readings, hymns, praise and prayer suggestions. There will be three sections, one for the morning, one for the daytime and another for the evening. We encourage you to use this on your own, together with your family or as you gather with others in the church to pray (see below).

Prayer Gatherings

  • MORNING – we will start the day with online prayer meeting at 7am. This will begin promptly at 7am and last a half hour. To join follow the link in your email.
  • DAYTIME – during the day we encourage you to gather for prayer with others from the church family. You can do this in-person or online and could use the Prayer Guide to help structure the time. Note: Please be considerate of others and practice social distancing at in-person gatherings.
  • EVENING – we are in the process of planning an in-person prayer meeting, at the church on Friday night. Check you inbox for details.

Fasting

As you consider fasting, please consult your physician if you have any health concerns. If you have never fasted before, it is good to start small, perhaps fasting for just one meal. You could also opt for a limited fast from coffee, sweets, cell phone use, TV etc. The main aim is to focus our hearts on God in prayer. Finally, be considerate of others and chose a time to fast that doesn’t hinder your ability to perform your work or serve your family.

However you decide to approach this time – we pray God will use it to strengthen us, encourage us and further His Kingdom.

Don’t hesitate to reach out to us at elders@westvalleypres.org if you have any concerns or questions.

In Christ,

The Session of West Valley Presbyterian Church
