worship as communal exchange

called to come in

God comes near and calls his people out of the world, and takes hold of us and brings us into the community of Himself.

SONG: Praise the Lord

Show us who You are
Show us who You’ve always been
Who You’ll always be

Make us love the Truth
Open up our ears to hear
our eyes to see

Fill our hearts with faith
Teach our souls to say

Praise the Lord for all He is
and all that He has done

Praise the Lord! His name is great
His victory is won
Praise the Lord

You’ve filled our hearts with faith
You’ve caused our souls to say

You are who You are
You are who You’ve always been
Who You’ll always be

Thank You for the Truth
Thank You for the ears to hear
the eyes to see

we hear | Isaiah 12:1-3

(leader) Behold, God is our salvation; we can trust and not be afraid; the Lord God is our strength and song!

(all) Give thanks to the Lord, call upon his name, make known his deeds among the peoples, proclaim that his name is exalted!

SONG: Open the Eyes of My Heart

Open the eyes of my heart Lord
Open the eyes of my heart
I want to see You, I want to see You

To see You high and lifted up
Shining in the light of Your glory
Pour out Your power and love
As we sing holy, holy, holy

Holy, holy, holy
Holy, holy, holy
Holy, holy, holy, I want to see You

Isaiah 6:1-7

I saw the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up; and the train of his robe filled the temple.  Above him stood the seraphim. Each had six wings: with two he covered his face, and with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew.  And one called to another and said: “Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of hosts; the whole earth is full of his glory!”  And the foundations of the thresholds shook at the voice of him who called, and the house was filled with smoke. And I said: “Woe is me! For I am lost; for I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips; for my eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts!” Then one of the seraphim flew to me, having in his hand a burning coal that he had taken with tongs from the altar.  And he touched my mouth and said: “Behold, this has touched your lips; your guilt is taken away, and your sin atoned for.”

confessing our sin

God the Spirit reminds us that God the Father has saved us through the righteous life and sacrificial death of Christ the Son – and in faith we rest on his gracious interest to renew us yet again.

we hear | Prayer from 1 Peter 1.15-19 and the Valley of Vision: Book of Puritan Prayers

(leader) As he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, since it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.” And if you call on him as Father who judges impartially according to each one’s deeds, conduct yourselves with fear throughout the time of your exile, knowing that you were ransomed from the futile ways inherited from your forefathers, not with perishable things such as silver or gold, but with the precious blood of Christ.

(all) Merciful Lord, pardon all my sins of this day, week, year, all the sins of my life.
Sins of omission and commission,
Sins of omission and commission,
of morose, peevish and angry tempers,
of lip, life and walk
of heard-heartedness, unbelief, presumption, pride
of deception, injustice, untruthfulness in my dealings with others,
of impurity in thought, word and deed,
of covetousness, which is idolatry.
Sins in private and in the family,
in study and recreation
in time misspent,
in yielding to Satan’s wiles,
in opening my heart to his temptations.
Pardon all my sins, known and unknown,
felt and unfelt,
confessed and not confessed
remembered or forgotten.
Good Lord, hear; and hearing – through Jesus – forgive.  Amen.

we rest | SONG: Sin is Powerless

Subdue in me, the love of sin
Wash my life, without, within
Teach my soul to long for only You
Teach us Lord, to cling to the truth

There is no guilt, no shame
no hold on us
You are victorious

There is no curse, no blame
no fear in love
now sin is powerless

So fill my life to overflow
I claim the cross as all my hope
Teach my soul to long for only You
Teach us Lord, to cling to the truth

There is no guilt, no shame
no hold on us
You are victorious

There is no curse, no blame
no fear in love
now sin is powerless

The Spirit that raised You
up from the grave
is in us, is in us

We’re covered in grace
our failures erased
in Jesus, in Jesus

The Spirit that raised You
up from the grave
is in us, is in us

We’re covered in grace
our failures erased
in Jesus, in Jesus

There is no guilt, no shame
no hold on us
You are victorious

There is no curse, no blame
no fear in love
now sin is powerless

There is no guilt, no shame
no hold on us
You are victorious

There is no curse, no blame
no fear in love
now sin is powerless

declaration | Psalm 32:1-2

(leader) Blessed is the one whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered.

(all) Blessed is the one against whom the Lord counts no iniquity!

consecrated by the Word

God declares the finished gospel of his Son, and continues his powerful, internal work of  change/consecration by his Spirit.

sermon | Up, In, Out  •  John 17:1, 22-23

we respond | SONG: Nothing But the Blood

What can wash away my sin
Nothing but the blood of Jesus
What can make me whole again
Nothing but the blood of Jesus

Oh! precious is the flow
That makes me white as snow
No other fount I know
Nothing but the blood of Jesus

For my pardon, this I see
Nothing but the blood of Jesus
For my cleansing this my plea
Nothing but the blood of Jesus

Nothing can for sin atone
Nothing but the blood of Jesus
Naught of good that I have done
Nothing but the blood of Jesus

This is all my hope and peace
Nothing but the blood of Jesus
This is all my righteousness
Nothing but the blood of Jesus

Now by this I’ll overcome
Nothing but the blood of Jesus
Now by this I’ll reach my home
Nothing but the blood of Jesus

Glory! Glory! This I sing
Nothing but the blood of Jesus
All my praise for this I bring
Nothing but the blood of Jesus

SONG: Community

Teach us to be community, Jesus
Teach us to be community
Unify our hearts as one
Unify our hearts as one

One church, one family
Sharing with all
To each as they need

One goal, one purpose
Glory to God
In this we agree

One Spirit, one Counsel
Move in Your church
To teach it and heal it

One hope, one vision
Open Your Word
This is where You reveal it

One part suffers, all parts suffer together
One part honored, all parts rejoice

compelled to go out

God blesses us and charges us go out and extend his kingdom into the broken world around us, making disciples of all nations.

benediction | 2 Peter 3:18

Now may you grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and to the day of eternity.  Amen.
