worship as communal exchange

called to come in

God comes near and calls his people out of the world, and takes hold of us and brings us into the community of Himself.

SONG: Holy, Holy Holy

Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty
Early in the morning our song shall rise to Thee
Holy, holy, holy, merciful and mighty
God in three persons, blessed Trinity

Holy, holy, holy! all the saints adore thee
casting down their golden crowns around the glassy sea
Cherubim and seraphim falling down before thee
who wert, and art, and evermore shalt be

Holy, holy, holy!  Though the darkness hide thee
though the eye of sinful man Thy glory may not see
Only Thou art holy, there is none beside Thee
Perfect in power, in love and purity

Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty
All thy works shall praise thy name in earth and sky and sea
Holy, holy, holy! merciful and mighty
God in three persons blessed Trinity

we hear | Revelation 22:17

(leader) The Spirit and the Bride say, Come.  And let the one who hears say,

(all) Come!

(leader) So let the one who is thirsty come; let the one who desires take the water of life without price.

SONG: Better is One Day

How lovely is Your dwelling place
Oh Lord Almighty,
For my soul longs and even faints for You
Oh, here my heart is satisfied
Within Your presence
I sing beneath the shadow of Your wings

Better is one day in Your courts
Better is one day in Your house
Better is one day in Your courts
Than thousands elsewhere

One thing I ask, and I would seek,
To see Your beauty
To find You in the place Your glory dwells
One thing I ask, and I would seek,
To see Your beauty
To find You in the place Your glory dwells

My heart and flesh cry out
To You, the Living God
Your Spirit’s water to my soul
I’ve tasted, and I’ve seen
Come once again to me
I will draw near to You
I will draw near to YouTo You

Better is one day in Your courts
Better is one day in Your house
Better is one day in Your courts
Than thousands elsewhere
Than thousands elsewhere

confessing our sin

God the Spirit reminds us that God the Father has saved us through the righteous life and sacrificial death of Christ the Son – and in faith we rest on his gracious interest to renew us yet again.

we hear | Prayer from Valley of Vision Book of Prayers

The LORD is my chosen portion and my cup; you hold my lot.
The lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; indeed, I have a beautiful inheritance.
I bless the LORD who gives me counsel; in the night also my heart instructs me.
I have set the LORD always before me; because he is at my right hand, I shall not be shaken.
Therefore my heart is glad, and my whole being rejoices; my flesh also dwells secure.
For you will not abandon my soul to Sheol, or let your holy one see corruption.
You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore

we confess | from Valley of Vision, book of Puritan Prayers

O changeless God, under the conviction of the Spirit I learn that the more I do the worse I am, the more I know the less I know, the more holiness I have the more sinful I am, the more I love the more there is to love.  O wretched man that I am!  Of all hypocrites, grant that I may not be an evangelical hypocrite, who sins more freely because grace abounds, who tells his lusts that Christ’s blood cleanseth them, who loves evangelical preaching, churches, Christians, but lives unholily.  My mind is a bucket without a bottom, with no spiritual understanding, no desire for the Lord’s Day, ever learning but never reaching the truth, always at the gospel-well but never holding water.  My conscience is without conviction or contrition.  My will is without power of decision or resolution.  My heart is without affections and full of leaks.  My memory has no retention, so I forget easily the lessons learned, and thy truths seep away.  Give me a broken heart that yet carries home the water of grace.  Amen

we rest | SONG: Jesus, Lover of My Soul

Jesus, lover of my soul
let me to Thy bosom fly
While the nearer waters roll
while the tempest still is high

Hide me, O my Savior, hide
till the storm of life is past
Safe into the haven guide
O receive my soul at last

Other refuge have I none
hangs my helpless soul on Thee
Leave, ah! leave me not alone
still support and comfort me

All my trust on Thee is stayed
all my help from Thee I bring
Cover my defenseless head in
the shadow of Thy wing

Thou, O Christ, art all I want
more than all in Thee I find
Raise the fallen, cheer the faint
heal the sick, and lead the blind

Just and holy is Thy Name
I am all unrighteousness
False and full of sin I am
Thou art full of truth and grace

Plenteous grace with Thee is found
grace to cover all my sin
Let the healing streams abound
make and keep me pure within

Thou of life the fountain art
freely let me take of Thee
Spring Thou up within my heart
rise to all eternity

declaration | Psalm 32:1-2

(leader) Blessed is the one whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered.

(all) Blessed is the one against whom the Lord counts no iniquity!

consecrated by the Word

God declares the finished gospel of his Son, and continues his powerful, internal work of  change/consecration by his Spirit.

sermon | Begged to Reconcile  •  Philippians 4:1-5

we respond | SONG: How Great the Father’s Love

How deep the Father’s love for us
How vast beyond all measure
That He should give His only Son
to make a wretch His treasure

How great the pain of searing loss
The Father turns His face away
As wounds which mar the Chosen One
Bring many sons to glory

Behold the Man upon the cross
My sin upon His shoulders
Ashamed, I hear my mocking voice
call out among the scoffers

It was my sin that held Him there
until it was accomplished
His dying breath has brought me life
I know that it is finished

I will not boast in anything
No gifts, no power, no wisdom
But I will boast in Jesus Christ
His death and resurrection

Why should I gain from His reward
I cannot give an answer
But this I know with all my heart
His wounds have paid my ransom

Why should I gain from His reward
I cannot give an answer
But this I know with all my heart
His wounds have paid my ransom

SONG: Be Thou My Vision

Be Thou my Vision, O Lord of my heart
Naught be all else to me, save that Thou art
Thou my best thought by day or by night
Waking or sleeping, Thy presence my light.

Be Thou my Wisdom and Thou my true Word
I ever with Thee and Thou with me, Lord
Thou my great Father, I thy true son
Thou in me dwelling and I with Thee one

Riches I heed not nor man’s empty praise
Thou mine Inheritance now and always
Thou and Thou only first in my heart
High King of heaven, my Treasure Thou art

High King of heaven, my victory won
May I reach heaven’s joys, O bright heaven’s Sun
Heart of my own heart whatever befall
Still be my Vision, O Ruler of all
